Tephrocactus articulatus papyracanthus AKA Paper Cactus stricking succulent 10cm

£10.45Price

This extraordinarily striking & architectural plant originates from Argentina where they live on the arid slopes of the lower Andes. Their name in full, Tephrocactus articulatus papyracanthus, roughly translates as 'jointed paper ash cactus'.  This goes some way to describe their extraordinary appearance with their articulated structure of rounded ash green pads. These are studded with spines (which are adapted leaves) that appear to have been encased in paper sheaths.  These structures whilst protecting the plant from predation have evolved primarily to maintain humidity round the plant in its very arid environment acting almost like hairs on the skin of the plant.  When they flower, which they do on the tops of their 'heads' their flowers are small & white with yellow centres.

The ideal spot for your Thephrocactus articulas papyrancanthus is  a sunny south facing window sill where it can enjoy bright direct light.  Avoid any part of the house which might be humid, like kitchens or bathrooms, as this plant is adapted to very arid air and in such environments can be vulnerable to fungal disease.

Like many plants from arid and exposed areas your Tephrocactus articulatus papyracanthus is, perhaps surprisingly, very tolerant of low temperatures.  This is because at night the temperature in its wild high altitude habitat can go as low as 0°C.  However it will start to suffer if this temperature persists for a long period of time or ever dips below it even slightly.  So avoid leaving behind a closed curtain next to a frosty window or exposed to an icy draught.

This plant is supplied in a 10cm along with comprehensive easy to follow care guidance.
