Pilea hitchockii AKA Dark Mystery dramatic dark purple metalic sheen leaves
Pilea hitchcockii is such a strikingly handsome little plant with attractive pointed ribbed leaves with a serrated edge. Reminiscent of reptile skin these are in intriguing shades of deep grey and chocolate-maroon, with a metallic hue. There’s such a depth to Pilea hitchcockii’s leaf colour which needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. The native range of this Pilea species is from Colombia to Ecuador. Pilea hitchcockii grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. This is a small, clump forming plant that thrives in bright but indirect light. This is a tender plant that thrives in warm and very humid environments so make ideal bathroom, kitchen or terrarium plants where they look stunning in contrast, both in colour and form, with other plants. Positioning and care
This requires a spot with very good, but mostly indirect, light. Light on the leaves in the early morning, or late afternoon is fine but any more will damage the leaves making the colour much more muted.
It enjoys humidity so a place in a kitchen or bathroom is ideal. In winter avoid cold draughts and heat sources which dry out the air.
It does not like to be sodden but nor does it like to completely dry out. Leave it till the top of the pot feels dry to the touch and when you press your finger into it. We find under watering avoids any damange to those lovely leaves.
