Aeschynanthus 'Bolero Bicolore' vivid variegated trailing scarlet flowering plan

Like many of the plants we share our houses with Aeschynanthus are epiphytic plants (they grow on & in tropical ever green trees). This makes it possible for them to live in the conditions we can offer in the average UK home.   They are commonly known as lipstick plants for their vivid red tubular shaped flowers.  These evolved to enable them to entice humming birds to pollinate their flowers.  In our house they flower for over two months producing flowers all along their vines.  
This particular cultivar is prized for its bright variegated leaves and this really is a cheerful plant to have around.  They are striped white, lime & teal green. When Aeschynanthus Bolero Bicolore flowers these are scarlet red & look stunning in contrast with the green of its leaves. In our experience these are easy plants to look after.  Although some care guidance suggest that they should be kept temperatures between 18-26°C we have found that they can tolerate it as low as 10°C.  This is as long as this is not for a prolonged period of time & they are kept away from cold drafts.  There is some evidence that cooler and drier conditions during the winter also encourage the development of more flower buds for the next year.  
Like most tropical plants Aeschynanthus enjoy humidity.  However because they are epiphytic they can tolerate a greater range of humidity levels than plants such as a calatheas which have a very narrow range of habitat. They enjoy a spot in the Kitchen or bathroom where humidity levels are naturally higher.  In another room avoid heat sources and if the air is very dry add to their humidity by misting regularly.  Do this in the morning to best avoid fungal disease.  
They also benefit from regular feeding and, if you want to encourage the development of flowers,  choose a fertiliser with additional potassium.
