Hoya krohniana BLACK LEAVES AKA Heart leaf Hoya

Hoya krohniana BLACK LEAVES is a hybrid of a Hoya originating from South East Asia and referred to as the Heart Leaf for the shape of its leaves.  In this hybrid the leaves are purple/black with a slight rose tint.   This is a dense small leaf variety and its flowers are rich cinnamon-scented white blossoms with yellow crowns. It is attractive both in leaf and flower.  Due to the positioning of the leaves so close together on the stem this makes for an elegant trailing plant in the home. 

Postion your Hoya krohniana BLACK LEAVES in a spot where it gets good light but only directly on its leaves in the early morning or late afternoon.  Any more intense light results in a discoloration of the leaves.  Being tropical plants they do like it warm but can go as low as 10°C without suffering leaf loss but keep away from cold draughts and windows during winter. 

Water your Hoya krohniana BLACK LEAVES only when the growing medium has completely dried out and the leaves look slightly dull and feel thin.  Then drench the pot ensuring that the whole root ball has been completely soaked and all the excess has drained away before replacing it in its cover pot.  You can use this as an opportunity to clean the leaves which will promote better growth.  

On a Hoya krohniana BLACK LEAVES the leaves form very closely together on the stem making for a very attractive trailing plant in the home.  It can also be trained to climb up a moss pole or be mounted.  When it flowers these are creamy white, which make a lovely contrast to the dark leaves, with a smell reminiscent of cinnamon.
