Dracena fragrans 'Yellow Surprise' AKA Dragon Tree

Dracena fragrans 'Yellow Suprise' has very bright yellow & lime green stripes and is a cultivar of Dracena Fragrans the Dragon tree.   'Drakaina' means female dragon in Greek.  It's wild relative is native throughout tropical Africa, from Sudan south to Mozambique, west to Côte d'Ivoire and southwest to Angola.  Here it grows in a range of light conditons in relatively poor soil.  They are slow growing and as they do so loose leaves to create a bare stem creating a palm tree effect.  In the wild they can reach heights of 15 metres whilst in the home get to over a metre tall in a couple of years creating a very architectural plant. 

This can tolerant a range of light conditions from one in which it gets no direct light to one in which it gets direct light on its leaves for part of the day.  Though avoid a spot directly in the midday sun as too much harsh direct light will lead to leaf scorch.   We find that with cultivars with yellow in their leaves it is best to put them where they get some direct light otherwise the vibrancy of the colours tend to fade. 

Thoroughly water your Dracena fragrens Yellow surprise when the top half of the pot is dry.  Remove it from any cover pot and make sure that you thoroughly drench the root ball and then let any excess drain away before replacing it in a cover pot.  To maintain a healthy plant remember to feed every 3 weeks in the growing season.

Dracena fragrens Yellow surprise is a slow growing plant but will, in time, loose it leaves from its stem creating a bare stem with leaves at its top.  In time it can grow over 1 metre tall .
